I will explain why reading Marvel Comics is essential and how you can do it for free or cheap (if interested).
It can expand your worldview by introducing you to diverse characters.
You may not realize it, but you have a limited worldview. Even if you don’t consciously think about it, you probably have specific ideas about what people are like and how they live their lives. And those ideas are based on the kinds of stories and media that you’ve consumed in your life. When these stories are limited to white male characters who act just like stereotypical white guys (which is still the dominant narrative), your idea of what people are like will be limited too.
But when you read comics with diverse characters, even if they’re not necessarily the main focus of a story, those characters can help expand your understanding of how other people live their lives—and how different those lives might be! This can help bring new insights into yourself and others who aren’t precisely like yourself or share many of your experiences.
